He’s out to be a doctor

THE sight of his father who had difficulty walking inspired Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) student Wan Hafizan Wan Zulkefli to want to be a doctor.

The 15-year-old from Baling, Kedah, said his father, a former Royal Malaysian Air Force member, met with an accident 10 years ago.

Flying colours: Wan Hafizan shoeing his PMR results slip at the school yesterday.

“It saddens me whenever I see my dad walking with great discomfort. He had an operation and had metal plates implanted in his leg. I want to do better for people like my father,” said Hafizan, who scored straight As in the PMR examination yesterday.

Hafizan, who is a member of his school’s debating team and plays chess, was among 88 out of 105 STAR students to pass the PMR examination with flying colours.

The school produced the top PMR result for the third consecutive year in Perak, with the highest percentage of full A scorers at 83.9%.

Principal Abdul Hashim Abdul Karim said their students were encouraged to excel in academic and co-curriculum activities.

Earlier, during a press conference to announce Perak’s PMR results, state deputy education director Idris Ramli said 3,017 or 7.22% of government school pupils obtained straight As.

“There is an increase of 0.78% over last year’s 6.44%,” he said, adding 41,810 candidates from 225 schools in Perak sat for the examination in October.

He also said that of the 3,017 top scorers, 279 scored nine As, 2,083 (eight As) and 655 (seven As).

Idris said there was also an increase in the number of students with minimum passes at 64.83% or 27,105.
